A guide to Giving Tuesday 2024: The top four nonprofits changing lives in San Francisco

· 4 min read

As Giving Tuesday approaches, I want to take a moment to reflect on the nonprofits that have shaped my journey. As a third-year EECS student at UC Berkeley, I owe so much to the organizations that invested in me — and I want to highlight four that are changing lives in San Francisco.

Mission Bit: Coding the Future of San Francisco Youth

San Francisco's tech divide remains vast — only 4% of students were enrolled in computer science classes in 2018. Mission Bit addresses this gap through free, comprehensive coding programs that empower students to become creators rather than passive consumers of technology.

Why it matters: The organization breaks down barriers by offering free tech education to underserved communities, creating pathways to transformative careers.

My story: I joined Mission Bit in fall 2019. During the pandemic, I served as president of the student advisory board, writing grants, organizing virtual tech conferences, and securing laptops for students without access to learning tools.

SEO Scholars San Francisco: Making College a Reality

This eight-year program supports low-income, first-generation students in pursuing higher education. It maintains a 100% college acceptance rate with ongoing support through graduation.

Why it matters: Beyond college admission, SEO ensures student success through all four years.

My story: As a member of the 2022 cohort (26 students), I received academic resources including ELA and math classes, SAT tutoring, and industry mentorship. The cohort-based model created a supportive community throughout the college application process.

OperationSTART: Bridging the Opportunity Divide

I co-founded OperationSTART with two friends during high school. We noticed a critical gap: while San Francisco's Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF) funds many opportunities, no centralized platform existed to access them.

Why it matters: The platform connects youth with opportunities submitted by nonprofits, community members, and our founding team.

San Francisco Education Fund: Investing in Public Schools

The SFEF gets resources directly into classrooms through critical program funding, classroom grants, and teacher support.

Why it matters: By equipping schools and teachers with targeted resources, SFEF creates ripple effects benefiting entire communities. I've worked with SFEF as OperationSTART's fiscal sponsor. The organization funds technology, arts programs, and tools enabling transformative learning.
